Nicola is a London based artist working across painting, drawing, ceramics and graphic design.
'My mother was my first art teacher. Growing up in South Africa, I remember our house being filled with her colourful figurative paintings and ceramics. I became fascinated with her art supplies at a very young age and would spend hours painting on the kitchen floor. Since then I have always had a strong connection with the creation of art, it’s been my therapy, an expression of my identity and my passion.'
'My artwork is and always has been focused around women. I am fascinated by the distinctive, yet subtle contours of the female form. Incorporating my graphic design background, I work with simplified geometric shapes and features of the human face and body, with an aim to express a range of raw emotions in playful and unexpected ways. I’m able to explore the tenderness and intimacy of the human experience through playing with shape and form. My work appears somewhat abstract, yet identifiable, expressing feelings such as confusion, loneliness, resilience, boredom, lust, disapproval and ecstasy.
It’s all about minimalism, femininity, and expression.'
