‘Growing Up’ represents aspects of my childhood in the hot, dry country of central Queensland, Australia. I was a shy kid and an avid reader, and I still have a small collection of my tattered old books from childhood. Enid Blyton and Ronald Dahl were two of my favourite authors, and I still love these books, and my kids do too! We always had a huge fruit bowl on the table and my siblings and I would eat all the best fruit, leaving anything bruised or overripe for our parents - I recall thinking Mum must actually like bruised nectarines! Despite the arid gardening conditions, we always had a lovely bush garden, and often this little fluted glass vase would be filled with homegrown flowers and foliage on our dining table. Mum is a great seamstress and we had a lot of fabric in my childhood home - tablecloths, quilting fabric, dressmaking fabric, beautiful napkins and cushions … as a result I have always loved colourful, patterned fabric. I hope that children and young people might connect with the objects in my painting, to feel familiarity with the books and appreciate the beauty in flowers, fruit and fabrics in the way that I do.
